Former Gillingham midfielder Steve Lomas has been named the new manager of Scottish side St Johnstone.

Lomas has agreed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Scottish Premier League club from Perth.

The Northern Irishman has been confirmed as the successor to Derek McInnes, who left McDiarmid Park to take over at Bristol City.

Lomas finished his playing career at Gillingham having also played for Manchester City, West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers.

The 37 year old joined The Gills in the summer of 2007, but left the following January after having played just nine games for the club.

Lomas joins St Johnstone with his new side sitting fourth in the league and his only previous experience as a manager was at English non-league side St Neots Town.
